Hey! Two Meh-hee-cans Are Stealing My Car!

Here’s Jesse and Peter stealing my rental car, the 2010 Red Mustang Convertible. I was actually very surprised by the car. With the 3.7 litre V-6 with 305 HP makes you wonder why anyone would choose an 8 over this. Ok, ok. I know why they would. However in today’s frugal times, the gas mileage is too good to pass up. I saw most freeway driving with this car approaching 30mpg! With its 6-speed automatic and dual stainless steel exhaust it sounded and performed every inch a sports car. Sure it’s missing the push you back in your seat or snap-your-head passing acceleration. But, for everyday driving, I wouldn’t miss any of that.

I have to say too, that I have an aversion to red cars. I think they look like they are just trying too hard to be sporty. Too often in the late 70s and early 80s cars were painted and applied with all manner of stripe kits to give them the outward appearance of performance. For those who remember Mustangs of those days (we’re talking a measly 139 HP out of a whole 5.0 liters) you know that we are not easily fooled by such simple attempts at the substitution of performance found in a decal. But I have to say, with genuine speed and agility backing up the sparkling red color – this car was no pretender.

I’m already looking at the Kelly Blue Book of my 2005 PT Cruiser convertible to see if there’s a way to trade that in for one of these.

San Jose Dinner Together; Dan Beaman

In San Jose on our California trip we stopped and visited with friends. We picked up Princess Fire and Music, Dan Beaman on the way to San Jose, via Oakland. He was such a gracious host in San Francisco, and I had a great time this evening. It’s always good to travel back to the bay area.

Cliff House, San Francisco, June 2011

We were at the Sutro Bath ruins in San Francisco this lovely day. Rob loves the ruins and they are the inspiration of several of his art pieces. RobRough.com

This is one of those dreamy days, where it’s just he and I enjoying time together. So much of our time is spent with other people. We are always on the go, often running in directions that aren’t always parallel during the week. We enjoy our time together in the evening at the end of every day. But, I especially enjoy these times when we can just enjoy the company of each other without any outside distractions. He’s my favorite person in the world. He’s my favorite person ever. And, this picture will always remind of that.

Coming back to California; San Francisco

I love San Francisco. Although, I’ve admittedly never been to New York, I think San Francisco is the most beautiful city in America. It’s at once charming and cosmopolitan. I love the ocean breeze, the sun that peeks through the fog and all the landmarks that make San Francisco unique.

On our trip home for mom’s 75th birthday we stopped first at the Cliff House, where we had pop overs. These delicacies are amazing. They are rolls full of air and seem so light, you could eat a dozen. You could, I couldn’t – but they are THAT delicious.

Looking out over the ocean and seeing people run along the beach with their dogs and the birds circling above Rob and I were amazed at all the natural beauty that was just feet away. Amazing colors of flowers and greenery, some of it growing right out in between rocks. We were pondering, what it was about Texas that was so beautiful anyway?

Certainly Texas has it’s own charm, but I wouldn’t compare it to the natural beauty found in Golden Gate Park and all the surrounding communities of Northern California. And, when our bill came for our popovers, coffee and light bite – I was reminded. The beauty in Texas is found beyond the lazy banks of Lady Bird Johnson Lake, or the hills of West Austin or the charming rows of homes found in Hyde Park – it’s in the cost of living.

Visiting San Francisco is always a treat. I just would never be able to stomach living here at these prices. Sure, salaries are higher, sure, there are offsets. But, I have become an Austin person. It is the first time I’ve come “home” to California, and felt like a tourist.

Friends Dan and Kelly Out at the Taqueria

Here’s Dan and Kelli at Arrandas one of our favorite taquerias in Austin. Yum. I’ll just tell you right now, the favorite thing I eat there is chorizo tacos. Wow. Amazing. If you’re visiting Austin, the atmosphere is hole-in-the-wall-not-fancy, but the food is decent and decently priced. And didn’t my two friends take a cute picture. 🙂

Bacon & Waffles

Each month we gather with friends in South Austin for bacon and waffles. It’s a great time and Mike’s house and he has a wooden back porch over looking a wooded area with a stream. The stream is dried right now because we’re having a drought in this Texas summer.

But, the woods are still green and even though it’s as hot as blazes, we all stay cool under the tin roof. Here’s his big “puppy” who is such a lady. She sits patiently with her little paws crossed, waiting for a dropped waffle.
