Today marks the passing of Elizabeth Taylor. It’s so sad because it notes another passing of a rare Hollywood star. The numbers of those in the ranks of the yesteryear is shrinking and her movies were so great and to many of us, her beauty never faded.
I’m walking through the parking lot and I’m half way back to my office before I look around and realize, how beautiful it is outside. I’ve been so busy all morning even when I left my desk I wasn’t fully aware of my surroundings.
I know this picture isn’t of flowers or anything – but if you know me, it’s of cars, better than flowers.
It also gave me an opportunity to try out my new iPhone app which does cool things to photos. I like the effect of this one. I’m sure you’ll see more since it’s a fun toy to play with.
Rob is on a trip. He’s in Washington DC, in the snow. Following, he’s in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. So, he’s packing a parka and a speedo. Well, maybe not a “speedo”, but just when I was missing him the most, he snaps a picture on the beach that reminds me why I love him so much. He’s so thoughtful. 🙂
We went to Whole Foods with our friend Justin Miloro and others to make skin care products. I was intrigued because I always thought skin care products were comprised of ingredients I couldn’t pronounce, let alone anything that could be handled in anything but a sterile, full-body-suit, respirator-mask-wearing environment.
Then it occurred to me. Eww. Why would I put anything on my skin or hair that contained such items that I didn’t know what they even were. I always look at labels when I push my cart up and down the aisle of the grocery store. I’d like to at least be aware of what I’m putting in my body. Granted, I don’t always make the best choices, or sometimes there’s a trade off. This many calories over here, cut back on some over here.
But, what actually goes into the things I put on my body?
The great thing about this day’s events was that I not only learned what can go on my body, but how surprisingly (refreshingly) simple the ingredients can be. We spent the afternoon with the owners of the company and some of our friends, and with mixing bowls and gloves (gloves for the goopy factor, not for the caustic protection factor) we mixed ingredients as simple as brown sugar, orange essence, salt, lavender oils, jojoba butter among others.
Not only was it educational to see what the products are made of, it was fun and very endearing on a personal level. At the end we placed our labels on our products that we created. Not before taking a spoon and tasting our concoctions. I never would think to open a bottle of Acme scrub at home and plop a spoon in for a sample.
The best part is now that I know what goes into the products I pass by the Whole Foods, first-hand, I can purchase with much more confidence. After all, I’ve actually made these products before.
I look forward to visiting the Hugo Naturals headquarters the next time I visit my friend Justin in California. In the meantime, while I’m soaking in my tub and I reach for my brown sugar face polish, I feel reassured (and just a little proud), after all, I “made” that.
Somedays you look down at your phone and realize folks do love you and it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Here’s some friends sayin howdy. They are the best and I wish I got to spend more time with them 🙂
It’s now colder than at any time since our move to Austin. This was the temperature at 8pm but it got much colder at night with a wind chill of ZERO. Unbelievable. It’s only supposed to be a short stretch of cold however, so thank goodness for that. I’d forgotten what the midwest felt like. Walking through the parking lot with Rob, it all came back to me. He laughed hysterically to see the look on my face – I didn’t think it was funny at all.
It has taken 2 months thus far and the repairs are still in the works. Damn Farmers Insurance. And, curses to Rebreu Body Shop here in Austin. The truck is not restored to what it was – but it’s sufficient. It’s really hard to get the parts for these trucks, so the dash is mangled and the faceplate on the dash is all chipped up, but those were the best parts they could find. Ugh.
Cadillac problems of course when you consider I HAVE a truck to get broken into. So, no loud complaints here, just lots of grumbling. Although, I’ll likely change insurance companies. (Again).
Below is the second phase of the repairs. Sean, at the stereo place is busy as we speak putting the music back in my life. A Sony Explod receiver/CD/Ipod unit, with Rockford Fosgate Speakers, and what I should have had all along – a Viper alarm system.
So, while spring seems far away on a cold and overcast day like today – it will come again – before we know it. And, I’ll be READY.
Besides, I get to watch “Sean” install it. Sigh. I hope he needs help. 🙂
I’m back. Returned home from California on Sunday night. It was a great trip and I certainly enjoyed seeing the family.
I particularly enjoyed my car trip with my Mom, Esther, through the Central Valley to Turlock to visit her cousin Lupe. We had a nice conversation and I learned so much about the family. Be on the look out in a future posting about the information I gathered.
I hope your New Year was amazing and I look forward to the possibility of seeing you this coming year.
Here’s Mom, Tom, Rocki and the kitty of course. We were saying our goodbyes until next time, which looks like it’s the second weekend in June, 2011. Mom’s 75th Birthday is coming up. We hope to see many of you there!
Spending an afternoon with the neices and nephews at the pizza place in Roseville. We had a great time and they make fresh donuts there, which apparently are perfectly bite-size 🙂
